Workshops on Environmental Sensitivities
In order to help people who suffer from Environmental Sensitivities (ES) and to address a great need for simple, clear information in French, ASEQ-EHAQ collaborated with UQAM, TELUQ and UQAM’s Service aux Collectivités to develop workshops and other material on Environmental Sensitivities. This project was funded by the Ministry of Education, Québec (Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport). Subsequently, 28 people from eleven regions of Québec were trained as 'trainers' to deliver the workshop to ES sufferers, their entourage and anyone else whom the patient felt would benefit from the workshop such as their medical practitioner, lawyer, building manager, co-workers, etc. Following the training, workshops have been given by these trainers in ten regions of Québec, with support from UQAM, TELUQ and ASEQ-EHAQ. These workshops are on the biological and legal aspects of ES.
The three main themes of the workshop are
1) Understanding the illness and its context,
2) Rights related to the workplace and housing, and
3) Methods, tools and resources to better manage this condition.
The workshop is grounded in medical, biological and legal facts.
One of the frequent side effects of ES on the individual and his or her entourage is isolation and a diminution of activities. It is therefore important to take this information to the individuals in their regions by offering the possibility of participating in a workshop in their own region.
The workshop’s main goal is to help people suffering from ES become more conscious of their needs, better manage their medical condition, and prepare to retake their place in society. These workshops are therefore a place for recognition and sharing among participants. A realistic and constructive approach is used in order to increase the person’s ability to act by giving them simple and effective tools to assimilate complex content.
Since the successful completion of this project, ASEQ-EHAQ is looking forward to holding workshops across Québec through the people who have been trained as trainers.
